Work for East End Arts this summer! We’re hiring two summer positions, which will each run for an 8-week-long contract. Join us as a Communications and Development Assistant, or a Programming Assistant. The deadline to apply for both positions is Monday May 20, 2019, by 11:59 pm.

Communications & Development Assistant

Deadline: May 20, 2019
Start Date: Flexible
Term: 8 Weeks, Full Time
Rate of Pay: $14-15/hour
Reports to: Marketing & Outreach Coordinator and Executive Director

The Communications and Development Assistant’s responsibilities will include supporting East End Arts’ strategic communications and development activities over 8 weeks this summer (flexible start date). This position will support promotions, marketing, and social media activities related to East End Arts’ summer programming (ArtMEETS, East York Days) and communications programs, as well as contribute to development initiatives. The Communications and Development Assistant will report to the Marketing and Outreach Coordinator and Executive Director, and interface with the Program Coordinator.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting with the development of East End Arts’ monthly e-newsletter as well as other digital and print pieces for communications and promotions use.
  • Sourcing and sharing information about local events from constituent organizations and artists
  • Outreach to local artists and arts organizations to help promote our new online calendar of events in our catchment area
  • Developing social media content for summer programs like ArtMEETS and our summer concert series at the East York Civic Centre, East York Days.
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of promotions and digital marketing activities to support East End Arts programming (i.e. creating distribution plans and planning target groups for online ad targeting
  • Assisting with communications around development activities, including research, writing, distributing information, and community outreach
  • Supporting East End Arts at events

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Detail oriented, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks, schedules, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Advanced problem solving skills. You are a resourceful and creative thinker when faced with a challenge, and you understand that every problem has a solution. You think ahead, anticipate potential problems/outcomes, and plan accordingly
  • High level of initiative. You know how to take matters into your own hands and work both independently and as a team player.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for the arts.
  • Advanced computer competency in word processing, spreadsheets, data management, and social media platforms. And a willingness to learn.
  • Can-do attitude and a positive outlook with a strong sense of responsibility for your work.

Nice to Have:

  • Residence in the East End Arts programming area (east Toronto) preferred
  • Post-secondary education in a discipline relevant to arts administration, communications, marketing, public relations, or fundraising
  • Fluency in languages other than English

This position is supported through the Canada Summer Jobs program. CSJ 2019 includes new expanded eligibility to include all youth aged 15 to 30, which means youth who are not students are eligible. This change has been made to complement the Government’s renewal of the Youth Employment Strategy (YES), announced in Budget 2018.

To be eligible, participants must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Programming Assistant

Deadline: May 20, 2019
Start Date: Tuesday, July 2, 2019
Term: 8 Weeks, Full Time
Rate of Pay: $14-15/hour
Reports to: Program Coordinator and Executive Director

The Programming Assistant will report to the Program Coordinator and Executive Director. The Programming Assistant’s responsibilities will be to assist on multiple facets of summer activities produced by East End Arts (EEA) for 8 weeks this summer, in particular our weekly ArtMEETS workshops and East York Days, our free summer concert series which runs through the month of August. This position will begin with a focus on community outreach to patrons who are interested in participating in ArtMEETS and to local businesses and artisans to bring them onboard as part of East York Days’ Artisan Marketplace, then shift to volunteer management and event logistics in second half of placement. Please note this position will require the selected candidate to work on Saturdays through July and August to assist onsite with ArtMEETS programming. Start date of Tuesday July 2nd, 2019.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Community outreach and helping to develop partnerships with local businesses and restaurants to promote East York Days and solicit artisan vendors and foodtrucks to participate in our Marketplace.
  • Provide administrative support including word processing, data entry, list management, filing and correspondence related to ArtMEETS registration and questions around classes and registration.
  • Support the coordination, planning, implementation and evaluation of our events
  • Support with sponsorship and marketing activities, general research, and production and distribution of event-related materials
  • On occasion, respond to inquiries from East End Arts staff, volunteers and the general public
  • Volunteer Outreach to and scheduling of volunteers for East York Days.

This will include:

  • Connecting with past EEA volunteers,
  • Assessing volunteer requirements for 2019 events in collaboration with EEA staff
  • Outreach to new volunteer pools, including local youth groups
  • Training & orientation
  • Scheduling and tracking volunteer hours
  • Volunteer recognition
  • Event set up and tear down and other duties as they arise.
  • Assist with other duties, as required

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Incredibly detail oriented. You love the details – managing event logistics, creating production timelines, maintaining schedules, tracking and documenting materials, proofreading copy, etc. Things rarely fall through the cracks under your watch
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks, schedules, personalities and deadlines simultaneously
  • Advanced problem solving skills. You are a resourceful and creative thinker when faced with a challenge, and you understand that every problem has a solution. You think ahead, anticipate potential problems/outcomes and plan accordingly
  • High level of initiative. You know how to take matters into your own hands and work both independently and as a team player.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Comfortable working with a variety of stakeholders such as volunteers, local politicians, small business owners and community groups with a commitment to quality customer service. You feel comfortable talking to strangers and building connections for our work and East End Arts
  • Comfortable working in nonprofit setting with a strong interest in the performing arts, community engagement, public space activation and city building
  • Advanced computer competency in word processing, spreadsheets, data management (Eventbrite and Mailchimp) and social media platforms
  • Can-do attitude, positive outlook with a strong sense of responsibility for your work
