Seniors in the East: Chapter Two was a storybook art program that engaged 40+ seniors from the east end of Toronto to try new visual art skills, learn basic digital literacy skills, and connect and get creative with other seniors online and in-person at our Clubhouse! Seniors in the East: Chapter Two took place over eight months – August 2025 to March 2026 – and featured 10 art workshops (a mix of online and in-person) with talented artist facilitators, along with monthly tea afternoon sessions at St. Matthew’s Clubhouse to make and network with the other seniors. The goal of this program was to teach new art skills and techniques that could be executed on mixed-use paper in a bound storybook.

Over the course of this program, our senior participants have completed several beautiful 9″x12″ pieces of artwork that now fill the pages of their storybooks! Workshops enjoyed have included: Mixed-Media with Ashley Snook, Yarn Painting with Sabbie Narwal, Collage Self Portrait with Carla Sierra Suárez, Cyanotypes with Katika Marczell, Abstract Painting with Ghazaleh Rastgar, Watercolour Lettering with Nora Macphail, Gelli Printing with Taruna Singh, Illustrated Field Guides with Allie Brenner, Thread Weaving on Paper with Ebru Winegard, and Pop-Up Book Making with Joan Nuguid!

Now this incredible program is wrapping up with an in-person exhibition at St. Matthew’s Clubhouse for people to view all the artwork created by our talented seniors! There will also be an opportunity for new seniors to learn about the next edition of this annual program, Textile Tales (a similar format, but focussing on textile art). Come enjoy an afternoon or evening on the hill of Riverdale Park taking in these incredible storybooks made by local senior artists!
