Seniors in the East: A Storybook Program was a paper-based art program that engaged 30-35 seniors from the east end of Toronto to try new visual art skills, learn basic digital literacy skills, and connect and get creative with other seniors online and in-person at our Clubhouse! Seniors in the East took place over eight months – August 2024 to March 2025 – and featured six monthly art workshops on Zoom, two in-person guest speaker talks, and six monthly “Craft & Tea” sessions. The goal of this program was to teach new art skills and techniques that could be executed on mixed-use paper in a bound notebook.
Over the course of this program, our senior participants have completed several 9″x12″ pieces of artwork that now fill the pages of their storybooks! Workshops enjoyed have included: Oil Pastels, with Serafima Zibnitskaya; Imaginative Collage, with Katia Engell; Linocut Storytelling, with Jasmine Vanstone; Pochoir: Printing Without a Press, with Andrew Huot; Mixed-Media Art Journalling, with Megan Warren; Snowscape Watercolour, with Nora MacPhail; Homemade Paper-making, with Heidi Breier; Paper Marbling with Allie Brenner, and more!
Now this incredible program is wrapping up with an in-person exhibition at St. Matthew’s Clubhouse for people to view all the artwork created by our talented seniors! There will also be an opportunity for new seniors to sign up for the next edition of this program, Seniors in the East: Chapter Two. Come enjoy an afternoon or evening on the hill of Riverdale Park taking in these incredible storybooks made by local senior artists!
