ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
Partnering with the Image Centre of TMU, East End Arts is supporting a Cyanotype Zine Workshop for youth ages 15-25! In this three hour workshop, participants will each create their own miniature zine by utilizing the cyanotype printing technique to populate their zine’s pages. Participants will be guided through the hands-on process of cutting and folding their own miniature zine in preparation for printing. After which, we will coat our zine pages with photographic cyanotype chemistry, and prepare our page layouts and designs for printing. We will then expose our cyanotype prints under sunlight. Once the cyanotype prints are exposed, rinsed, dried, and folded, we will have each made a unique miniature zine, using only a historical photographic method and our own creativity!
WHAT TO EXPECT
- All workshop materials and supplies will be provided.
- Presto fare will be provided to each participant.
- Participants will each receive an honorarium of $50 after completing the workshop (this will be provided on the day of).
- Participants will be creating contact prints (photograms) using light sensitive cyanotype photo-chemistry, which they will expose using the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Participants may wish to bring objects/materials to incorporate into your photogram print. See below how different objects will translate into prints:
- Opaque (solid) objects will create silhouette tracings of their shape in your final print. Think stones, sticks, keys, fruit, hands, etc.
- Translucent (semi-clear) objects will also create tracings in your print, but some light may also pass through the object to create a wider range of tones. Think leaves, flower petals, feathers, thin fabrics, etc.
- Transparent (fully clear) objects will allow lots of light to pass through them, often creating more abstract shapes in your print. Think glass prisms, magnifying lenses, glass/plastic bottles, bubble wrap, etc.
- Workshop registration will close on Sunday, July 19th (11:59PM).
- All applicants will be notified of the status of their application no later than July 22, 2026.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
- Youth ages 15-25 (those ages 15-17 must have a legal guardian register on their behalf).
- Maximum of 10 spots available.
- Must not have previously participated in EEA’s Polaroid Emulsion Transfer workshops in partnership with The Image Centre
- No prior experience is required (this workshop is ideal for those interested in photography, printmaking, zine-making or illustration).
- Participants will be selected based on their responses to the questions below, and not everyone who fills out this form is guaranteed a spot. We will get back to everyone letting them know if they have been accepted or not.

ABOUT THE LEAD FACILITATOR
Bryce Julien is a Toronto-based artist, a program facilitator at The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University, and a graduate of the School of Image Arts, Photography Studies. Central to his practice is the positioning of photographic processes toward interpersonal development. Operating in analog and alternative mediums, his work focuses on exploring the reflexive potentials latent in photographic methods and materials. By situating the camera as a collaborative agent, he seeks to understand the negotiations of experiencing with photography.
